International Christian School was born out of a need for
affordable education for missionary children in the northern area of South
Korea. The experimental program began in the spring of 1983 with eight students
in a basement room. The military community also showed an overwhelming
interest, and by the time the doors were opened for the first day of the first
official school year, 83 students were present. The United States military
classifies the area north of Seoul as a "non-command-sponsored" tour,
but many military and contracted families bring their children to Korea at
their own expense in order to keep the family together. ICS-UJB, has met a
tremendous need for schooling for these military and contracted families, as
well as for missionary families.
ICS-UJB has become more international in nature throughout
the years, serving children from over thirty-five different countries. ICS consists primarily of international non-Christian families. However, teachers are required to be evangelical
Christians with a calling from God into world-wide missions. Teachers are also
required to integrate Bible into each of the curricular subjects taught at
ICS-UJB and to provide ample opportunity for children and parents to know
Christ personally. ICS-UJB strives to provide an education that will enable
each student to become a productive, responsible citizen with a positive world
view.
ICS-UJB was accepted as a candidate for accreditation in 1988. After an
extensive self-study, the schools were visited by the accrediting team
from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in April
1991. A dual ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) and
WASC self-study was completed during 1996-1997, as well as the
2002-2003, school years. ICS-UJB is fully accredited until 2008, at
which time the school will undergo another complete self-study for
continuing accreditation.
At ICSUJB it is understood that education, being the pursuit of truth, is
provided in the context that Jesus Christ is the absolute truth.
ICS-UJB offers a wide range of curricula, both Christian and
secular, to meet the needs of the children within its walls.
ICS-UJB moved into a new facility in 2003, and has installed technology that allows each classroom to be linked via intranet and internet through the phone system.
Additionally, we have installed 'smartboards' in every classroom. We intend to remain on the cutting edge of technology. ICS-UJB also leases a
nearby facility for Physcial Education classes, playground activities, and indoor athletic training. |
